Start Project

I am a new user. I am learning how to use revits. I am reading book and understanding it. But when I come to draw, I don't. know where to start. Could you give a starting point where I acn get on board.

Are your services free?

Always start with grids and levels.  Beyond that, it depends on what exactly you're doing.  If you're in structural revit, start laying out your floor/roof framing if you know what it is.  If arch...I'm not sure where to go from there.  I've never used arch revit to do anything but look at sections.  As you start to model different things, you will be able to see how you need to change the view ranges in element properties of your floor plans.

It's really just about diving into it.  It's hard to be taught a method of practice.  It's easier to ask the right questions once you start playing with it.

Grids and levels is the good starting point.  Set up your levels in an elevation.  Best guess to start is fine because it can be easily adjusted later.

Next, (it depends on the project), I'll layout my floor plan with walls, windows, doors, etc.  Make sure and use walls that go from ground up to roof where applicable for exterior walls (i.e. where you have multiple levels).  Interior walls that stack can be level dependent or can transverse levels.  Really up to how you set it up and how you want to be able to adjust the design down the road.

After you get your floor plan drawn, you can start fine tuning the model so your elevations look right.  The thing that has helped me the most is to remember to use all the views within Revit to help you (i.e. section, elevation, plan, 3D, etc.)  Don't just model in 3D, and get in the habit of looking at things in section.

Hope some of this will help you get started.  Feel free to post any other questions you have.

Oh...and, yes, this is a free forum.  I am usually pretty good about trying to answer back, and as you can see, others are as well (Pensing2) beat me to the punch on this one!

I am thinking about holding some sort of competition for postings to try and get more people involved.  Maybe there would be some sort of prize at the end of the month for the user with the most "relevant" posts or replies that contribute to the Revit community...

Just a thought...would love some feedback.  I'll probably create a separate announcement for this though...

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?  I'd love to hear other perspectives on good ways to start new people on projects.
