Preserving Links when Archiving a Project

Repost: Preserving Links when Archiving a Project (Source Link) Good stuff from the Revit Clinic...again...Detach from Central works wonders, as mentioned below...I don't think many people utilize this feature as much as they should Preserving Links when Archiving a Project What do you do when you need to archive a Revit project that has a whole bunch of linked Revit files attached? You will need to make sure that when someone opens the archived project that everything is included. The best way to do this for any project is to set your Links so that they use a Relative paths. This setting allows the path to be relative to the Revit file that it is linked into. At this point, it doesn't matter if you are archiving a central file or a standalone project, you should use relative pathing for the links if you want to archive the project. However, when opening the archived project with links, it does matter what you do. Standalone Projects For a standalone, nonworksharing project, relative paths lets you move the project RVT file and the links (using the same folder structure you are using now) and when open the project file, Revit will automatically find the linked files and load them correctly. Workshared Projects For a workshared central file, it is a little bit different. You should still use relative paths for your links, but when you open the central file normally after it has been moved to its archive location, you will see a string of messages and you will have to load the links again. To prevent these messages and to not have to reload the links manually, open the central file with the Detach from Central option selected. Not only will this allow the central file to open without the warnings about the file being moved, but any links that were set to be relative will but found and loaded correctly when the file opens in Revit (provided they are in the right location relative to the central file). Detach from Central creates a independent file, perfect for archived projects, and makes sure that all the relative links are loaded correctly when you open it. Its a nice quick, easy answer for opening a archived project. Below is a list of things to be aware of when browsing through the Revitinfo.com Forum:

1) As a registered user at Revitinfo, you automatically are signed up to recieve emails any time a new post or reply to existing post is made. You can change this setting while logged in under your User Profile by clicking on your user name at the top right of any page, next to the Date (or by clicking on the My Profile Button on any Forum Page). Once you get here, click on the "Edit Profile" link below your Quick Profile Information. Finally, select "Manage Profile" and scroll down the the very bottom to change your forum email subscription Settings.

2) Each Entry must have an assigned Category and EntryType. Not all categories have subcategories, but if the category you pick has subcategories, please pick the most appropriate for your entry.

3) Only registered, logged-in users have the privledges to create posts, reply to posts, and view attachments of posts. Registration is free, and like any other forum, is our way of increasing forum functionality and security.

4) As a registered user, you will also have the ability to subscribe to threads individually, rate them, and view a list of your posts. You can also edit posts that you have made. Also, as a registered user at Revitinfo, you automatically are signed up to recieve emails any time a new post or reply to existing post is made. 5) Soon, there will be a way for users to request other categories/SubCategories via a request form. Currently, for our system to work the way it has been designed, the category and subcategories as well as EntryTypes must remain a standard for all users of the site, in order to make searching/browsing information faster and easier.
