Footings

I'm using Revit Structure, and the model I'm working on now has footing thicknesses in it.  Typically (at least in CAD) when we drew our foundation plans, we joined all of our pad footings/strip footings wherever they touched.  I'd like to do the same in Revit, but because some of the pad footings are 6" deeper than the strip footings they interrupt, Revit wants to show that hidden line where the depth changes.  I've tried using the linework command where you can change some lines to invisible, and that won't let me touch the lines I want to.  I've also tried changing my model graphics style and in V/G, the view type of the arch model imported.

Any suggestions?

Can you attach a screenshot image of what you are taking about?  You should be able to edit your entry, by clicking the edit entry button of your Forum Entry, and go the attachments tab and add an attachment.  When you click "add," you should see your attachment in the list.  Go back to the main form using the tabs above and click submit (not really a necessary step, but easier this way).

I sort of need to see what you are talking about, although I think I understand by your description.

I'm probably staring right at whatever I need to do this, but how do I put a screenshot on here?  I tried to do the screenshot command and then paste and it didn't do anything.  I tried to attach a .doc with the screen shot on it, and it just kept asking if I wanted to open or save the file rather than attach it.

ok, lets see if i can explain  first of all, any thing your run into that is questionalvbe problem, take a screen shot and email them to admin@revitinfo.com

now all you need to do is when you add and new entry or reply, youll want to add the attachments first using the attachment tab at the top  when you do this, type in the name of the file (really doesnt matter what you put here, just something),  and click the browse button to browse your pc for the file.  when you find it, click the open button in the dialogue Nd on the web page click attach, when you do the page will refresh, and you should be able to see your attachement in the list on the attachment tab.  Next you can type in your entry in the normal area and submit.

So in the attached pdf, you can see that the F2's blend nicely with the strip footings around the wall because they are 1' thick as is the strip footing.  F4 and F5, however, are 6" deeper, so Revit wants to show the hidden lines of the bottom surface of those footings.  Anything I can do about it?  We probably just need to change our standards.  It's not a big deal, but we just always blended them before to make the sheets cleaner.

Thanks

I am going to see if I can duplicate this real fast in Revit Architecture...if not (may not have the right tools), I am downloading Revit Structure right now.  I think you might be able to just use the remove hidden lines tool.  Then you would select those two objects in the view you are it.  Easiest way to get them is probably to go into wireframe view so you can actual select the footings below.

You might try that, in the mean time, I'll see what I can figure out.

fyi...I was able to reduplicate your problem in Revit architecture...haven't gotten Revit Structure completely downloaded yet.    See the attached screenshot.  The column nearest the bottom is deeper than the other column, and the footing around the wall is the same depth as the column in the middle.  I see what you are saying.

Looks like when you set the view to "Structure" discipline, the "Show Hidden Linework" tool is disabled.

I'll check RST when I get it installed.  I would say it might be good to explore changing your standards.  A lot of the CAD standards came about from not drawing more than necessary or having to keep stuff like depth coordinated in a plan view, so they just decided they would keep them all the same depth.  Revit coordinates this for us now, so I personally like it the way it is out of the box.

Also, I converted your screenshot in the previous post to PDF so other users who may not have MS Word can view it.  If you can attach just a plain image or PDF, that's usually better.  Pasting your screenshot into Paint and saving it as a jpg works just fine.  I am also working on a mobile version of the website, particularly for mobile phones : )

fyi...in Revit Architecture 2010, with the view set to structural, I was able to use the Linework tool set the lines you don't want to see to the "invisible" category.  See attached screenshot.

Here's another interesting find...The linework tool only seems to work between the two foundations I made using the "isolated" foundation tool at the columns when they are different sizes.  It didn't want to work (probably similiar to your situation) between the foundation at the wall (which I used the "Wall" Foundation tool), and the foundation at the column using the "isolated" foundation

It's a workaround, but I was able to get it to work, finally.  Here's what you have to do (test done in Revit Architecture 2010 with a structural template):

1. Use the "unjoin geometry" tool and unjoin the object you want to change the linework for (in this case, the foundation at the column).  This will unjoin the geometry from not only the footing around the wall, but also your slab.

2. Rejoin the foundation at the column with the slab.  You should see a full box of hidden lines, similiar to before, but now you can select any one of the lines using the linework tool.

3. Remember when you using the linework tool, after clicking a line, you see blue grips that allow you to control how much of that line you are changing.  Use these controls to adjust how much of a line you are showing as invisible.

Hope that helps.  Not sure if it will work for you, since you are in Revit Structure...but see and let me know.  See attached screenshot.

So, how'd it go?  What were you able to figure out?  Did any of the suggestions I made work, or did I miss something?

Thank you for all the suggestions!  Unfortunately, we've been so rushed on the project, I haven't had time to play with it at all so for now, we are leaving them as they are.  When we slow down, I'll go back to it and let you know.

Thanks again!

Unjoining and rejoining the geometry worked...but I forgot that changing the linework is not a "trim" option by any means...it makes the entire line invisible.  I was thinking I was going to be able to change just the sections of the lines I wanted.  But I don't think it's worth it to try to fill those lines back in or anything just using linework.  The way it's shown is actually the accurate way...so I think I will just change our standards here.

Thanks for all the help...sorry for taking so long to get back to this subject.
